I think yaoi actually spans the entire..eh..sexual genre. There are the blatently PWP manga and series where, even if they try to stick a plot in from time to time, it doesn't quite work and you find yourself wondering when the next sex scene is; there are the maudlin romance novel mangas, where sex is a key point to the piece, but there is an actual plot that the reader can follow and not feel like their getting jipped; and there's the pieces where the plot is, by far, the most important thing, and when it comes to a sex scene one thinks either "*sweet*", "Pretty", or "yaaay!" (sometimes "Rrrowwr")
I personally am a fan the last two sections. Pretty boys getting it on with each other can only hold my attention for so long, no matter how hot it is. I need a break from the sex every once in a while to prove that these characters really are human. I like being able to feel for the characters in a manga (same goes for books) I'm reading, so that when they get together it's something the characters *deserve*, rather then something they're just...doing for the heck of it.
But then, my motto is something akin to "Make them suffer! Then they can have fun". I'm just an angst-addict to the bone.

Speaking of, YN has one big disadvantage: all her main characters in every series looks alike.

Well, hentai is usually for men, and yaoi is for us Ecchi onnanoko-tachi ^^ There are yaoi titles that ARE hentai, but it is not rule. And YN works are, as I said, porn for women - sex is very nice, characters doesn't drown in body liquids
Ops, sorry I took much space O_O for this post

Hmmmm, sounds like something I should check out. But it does make me feel kinda hyprocritical. I'm always on ppl's cases about hentai. But it's usually because of the kind of person that usually accompanies regular hentai. I guess I've always found the yaoi hentai ppl to be more mature, but who knows What works has this author done that aren't total PWP? As entertaining as naked guys are, I also love a good stroy (mmmm, love mode ^_^ )

oooh yesyesyes - I love Yuuka Nitta. there is quite a lot of her work out there. I think the one everyone talk about the first time her name is mentioned it Haru wo daiteita - thats the story about the two porn stars falling for each other. my favouritte at the moment is the When a man loves a Man series... mmmm - lots of deliciously looking hosts.
the premises to all those stories always sound so silly and mad but for some reason yuuka Nitta manage to convince you that it can actually work.
the art is great but some times (and don't hit me for saying this ><) I get the feeling that if you remove the cloths and the hair a lot of her characters end up looking the same... but who cares the sex scenes make up for everything.
oh yeah - and plot in yaoi is great but I have been known to by some shamelessly PWP before. so I can't totaly defend yaoi - if its pretty and smutty it usually work for me *sigh* I can be so shallow

omg omg, ka.. kaori yuki draws from models? So you mean people like Alexiel and stuff are actually real people?! I know the man who does Hanakimi draws from models (his friends)... and wow, the YN guys are also from real people.. hahah you really do learn something new everyday!
Hmm the hentai thing, I have to make a general kind of sexist comment here, guys are just more perverted than girls. Hentai is just like drawn porn. Usually in hentai, the girls aren't really so pretty, but they just have big boobs. For yaoi, its concentrated more on the face than the size down their. You know what i mean?
And hey, don't diss canada, I live in Canada and I manage to get some yaoi here!
OOOH i have to add this, its really been bugging me for a long time, those who read (he hagged..)-haru... Who is that freaky guy who looks like an exact replica of Iwaki. I've seen the part where he masturbates thinking about kato and Iwaki... he's so called the "antagonist" of the story rite? God, why do they always have to put some antagonist in the story. well i know, to keep things interesting.. but this wierd Iwaki twin guy really pisses me off
Kazusa Takashima, Youta Nitta, Ayano Yamane, AsamiToujou, Miki Sadahiro, Kazuma Kodata (KKH *drools*), Suzuki Tanaka...These are all yaoi mangakas that I really really admire

From my personal experience: women are more perverted than men ^^
(and I won't go into detail and tell why)
I can't speak for the hentai vs yaoi part since I didn't read/see much hentai stories/pics yet.. but simply judging from the ppl in my environment... women are definitely more perverted ^^
if you take a look at the digital angel site, there are a few pics of the guy who was the model for Rosiel/Alexiel/Setsuna.. and in the metropolis forum there was a thread somewhere about real ppl resembling AS chars. ^^;; just in case you want to see it.

i have to agree with shia about the women are more perverted then men - if anyone think otherwise they obviously haven't visited my little dirty mind. an I have been watching some hentai and I must say that some of the stuff in my yaoi collection match if not surpasss that.
I don't know why there the concept that we are not so dirty minded exist at all - perhaps we are better at hiding it, or perhaps we are expected to keep it to ourselves.
Yoi is different yes - because its supose to appeal to women and that is , no matter how you look at it, a different target audience than men (umm... duh ) I can't quite put my finger on why its different and I know that not only women read/ watch it. I think its prettier - smutty but prettier, but thats just an opinion.
